The Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities (PREO) program has opened its doors to applications for innovative renewable energy solutions in sub-Saharan Africa.
This initiative is focused on addressing the urgent need for reliable electricity access while fostering economic growth and promoting social equity.
At present, over 500 million people in sub-Saharan Africa live without dependable electricity, a challenge that stifles progress across several key sectors, including agriculture and small enterprises.
PREO is strategically designed to harness the vast potential of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and biomass.
With a particular emphasis on Productive Uses of Renewable Energy (PURE), the initiative aims to create sustainable business models that use clean energy to boost productivity and improve the quality of life.
It is projected that the program will create approximately 3,500 new jobs, with a strong focus on empowering 1,000 women within the workforce.
This job creation is essential in regions with high unemployment rates, providing stable incomes and encouraging local entrepreneurship.
A core goal of PREO is to improve access to renewable energy solutions that can have a profound impact on agricultural productivity.
For example, solar-powered irrigation systems offer farmers the opportunity to enhance crop yields while reducing dependence on costly and polluting fossil fuels.
Reports show that farmers using solar irrigation have seen a production increase of up to 185% per tree for crops such as mangoes.
This not only boosts personal incomes but also builds greater community resilience against economic instability.
