Egypt is making big progress in renewable energy with a project to build one of the largest wind farms in the world.
This ambitious plan, backed by a $10 billion investment, aims to produce 10 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy.
The project is being developed by a group that includes the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, known as Masdar, along with Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities.
They have signed a land access agreement with the Egyptian government to move the project forward.
The wind farm will be located in West Suhag and is expected to generate around 47,790 gigawatt-hours of clean energy each year.
This will help cut Egypt’s carbon emissions by about 23.8 million tons annually, which equals roughly 9% of the country’s total emissions.
The project aligns with Egypt’s goal of getting 42% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. By using wind power, Egypt plans to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and promote a cleaner environment.

One of the main benefits of this wind farm is its potential to save Egypt about $5 billion in natural gas costs every year.
As the country’s economy grows, so does the demand for energy. This project will meet that demand with a sustainable solution, providing power to homes and industries across the country.
The construction and operation of the wind farm are also expected to create thousands of jobs for local communities, boosting economic development.
The signing of the land access agreement was witnessed by top officials, including Egypt’s Prime Minister and the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
This shows the importance of the project, not just for local stakeholders but also for international partnerships that support renewable energy in Africa.
The collaboration between Egyptian companies and Masdar, a leading clean energy firm from the UAE, reflects a shared commitment to sustainable development.
Masdar’s CEO expressed optimism about the project’s potential to transform Egypt’s energy sector. He said the wind farm will “take innovation and scale in renewable energy to new levels.” The group behind the project is also exploring other opportunities in Egypt, including green hydrogen production facilities, which could further strengthen the country’s renewable energy initiatives.
