Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP), Africa’s largest wind power plant, has appointed George Njenga as its new Executive Chairman, effective November 1, 2024.
Njenga succeeds Mugo Kibati, who led LTWP for a decade and played a pivotal role in establishing Kenya’s first public-private energy partnership.
Under Kibati’s leadership, LTWP contributed approximately 12% of Kenya’s electricity to the national grid during its first five years of operation.
Kibati’s tenure was marked not only by LTWP’s growth but also by a strong commitment to community development.
The company’s “Winds of Change” initiative has implemented over 100 projects, benefiting nearly all 70,000 residents of Laisamis Constituency.
These efforts enhanced access to education through the construction of classrooms and laboratories and improved healthcare services by building clinics and maternity facilities. This dedication to local communities has been a cornerstone of LTWP’s mission.
George Njenga brings over 35 years of energy sector experience to his new role. He has overseen energy projects across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, covering oil and gas, renewable energy, and power generation.
Notably, Njenga has served as CEO of EA Infrastructure Platform, Chairman of Thika Power and Iberafrica Power, and CEO of General Electric (GE) South Africa, where he also led GE Renewable Energy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
