KenGen upgrades Olkaria’s oldest geothermal plant.

Kenya’s electricity leader, KenGen, has taken a significant stride towards its clean energy future. They secured a multibillion-shilling contract to rehabilitate Olkaria I, the country’s oldest geothermal power plant.

The project breathes new life into a symbol of Kenya’s pioneering spirit of renewable energy. The upgrade aims to increase Olkaria I’s power generation capacity from 45 megawatts (MW) to 63 MW, a 40% jump. 

This directly aligns with Kenya’s ambitious Vision 2030 goal of 100% green energy by 2030. The additional clean power will significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels and propel Kenya towards a sustainable energy future.

Seasoned Chinese firm SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co. Ltd will spearhead the project, leveraging their extensive experience in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) for power plants. 

Joining them is Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions Corporation, a reputable Japanese company supplying the plant’s new, state-of-the-art steam turbines and generators. This collaboration ensures successful execution with cutting-edge technology for optimal performance.

Commissioned in 1981, Olkaria I holds immense historical significance as the oldest geothermal power plant in Africa. It has served as a cornerstone of Kenya’s energy landscape for over four decades. The upgrade goes beyond increasing output; it’s a testament to Kenya’s commitment to preserving its pioneering role in geothermal energy.
