KenGen Announces Major Solar Project at Seven Forks in Kenya

Kenya’s energy landscape is about to get a significant boost with the ambitious 42.5 MW solar project at Seven Forks, spearheaded by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen). 

This groundbreaking initiative marks a crucial step towards achieving the nation’s renewable energy goals and harnessing the full potential of its natural resources.

The project’s location is no coincidence. The Seven Forks boasts a unique geographical feature – the Tana River, Kenya’s longest river, splits into seven distinct channels at this very spot.

This abundance of water resources has already made Seven Forks a hub for hydropower generation with existing dams managed by KenGen. 

The solar project strategically complements this existing infrastructure. The Seven Forks dams are currently at full capacity, presenting an excellent opportunity to maximize hydropower generation. However, the addition of the solar farm allows KenGen to leverage the region’s abundant sunlight as well. 

This innovative approach allows for a two-pronged attack on energy generation, maximizing power production during peak sun hours and relying on hydropower during the night or when sunshine is limited.

The Seven Forks solar project is a vital piece in KenGen’s long-term strategy to diversify its energy mix.  The company is actively working on upgrading other hydropower stations across the country while recognizing the crucial role of hydro and geothermal resources in Kenya’s energy consumption.

Integrating solar power with hydropower allows for more sustainable water resource management, minimizing the dependence on hydropower during peak dry seasons. 

Feasibility studies and comprehensive environmental impact assessments were conducted before initiating the project, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding ecosystem.
