The ambitious Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya (ZTK) Power Interconnector project has taken a significant step forward with the issuance of tenders for major works, signaling accelerated progress towards integrating the Eastern and Southern African Power Pools. This eagerly awaited initiative is poised to create one of the world’s largest power markets, fostering regional energy trade and enhancing electricity access across a vast geographical area.
The ZTK Interconnector is a critical component of Africa’s broader energy integration strategy, designed to bridge existing gaps in transmission infrastructure and facilitate the seamless flow of electricity between nations. The project’s scope is substantial, involving the construction of approximately 620 kilometers of 400 kV double-circuit transmission lines. A key segment for which bids have been requested is Package 3, covering the vital Kasama-Nakonde line, which will connect Zambia to Tanzania.
This interconnector is not merely about transmitting power; it is about unlocking economic potential and improving livelihoods. By linking the Eastern African Power Pool (EAPP) and the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), the ZTK project will enable countries with surplus generation capacity to export power to those with deficits, optimizing resource utilization and promoting energy security across the region.
