Eskom Warns Drivers After Rising Damage to Electricity Poles in Midrand

South Africa’s electricity infrastructure is under pressure from more than load shedding and ageing equipment. Increasingly, it is also being damaged on the roads.

Eskom has appealed to motorists in Midrand to drive more cautiously after a growing number of electricity poles were damaged by vehicles, particularly during night-time incidents.

The warning followed concerns over a leaning electricity pole on Macinnes Road in Glenferness that residents said had become unstable during windy conditions.

According to Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena, the pole had deteriorated over time because of ageing infrastructure and prolonged exposure to environmental conditions. The utility eventually stabilized and replaced the structure after residents and local officials raised concerns.

On the surface, the incident appears isolated. South Africa’s electricity infrastructure is ageing across multiple regions at the same time. Maintenance teams are operating under financial and operational pressure while infrastructure failures continue accumulating in smaller, less visible ways. A damaged pole may seem minor compared to national generation shortages.

But local infrastructure failures carry broader consequences. Emergency repairs redirect technical teams. Outages disrupt businesses and households. Maintenance budgets stretch further. Communities lose confidence in the reliability of local infrastructure management.

The system weakens incrementally. Ward councillor David Foley described the condition of the Glenferness pole bluntly. “It was floating as the base was completely rotten.” That description captures the wider challenge facing South Africa’s electricity network.

Much of the infrastructure is still functioning, but sections of it are ageing faster than replacement cycles can keep pace with. At the same time, Eskom says vehicle collisions involving electricity poles are increasing, particularly in the Midrand area during night-time driving conditions.

That creates another operational burden for already stretched maintenance systems. Electricity infrastructure does not only fail because of major technical breakdowns or generation shortages. It also deteriorates through weather exposure, physical impact, delayed maintenance and repeated strain over time.

These smaller failures rarely dominate national headlines. But they shape how communities experience the electricity system daily. The deeper concern is that infrastructure stress is becoming cumulative.

Ageing poles. Financial pressure. Theft. Delayed repairs. Physical damage. Maintenance backlogs. Each issue compounds the next. And when infrastructure systems begin absorbing multiple forms of stress simultaneously, resilience starts eroding quietly long before full breakdown becomes visible.
