ACWA Power, a Saudi renewable energy company, is set to build a massive 2-gigawatt (GW) wind farm in South Hurghada, Egypt.
Once completed, this will be the largest wind farm in the country, surpassing ACWA Power’s existing 1.1 GW Suez Wind Farm.
The project will cost about $2.3 billion and is backed by a 25-year power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
The new wind farm will produce enough electricity to power nearly 2 million homes. It will also help Egypt increase renewable energy in its electricity supply to 42% by 2030. This project fits into the country’s larger plan to rely less on fossil fuels and move toward clean energy solutions.
By generating clean electricity, the wind farm will cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 3.5 million tonnes per year. This helps Egypt meet its climate commitments and tackle environmental challenges.
ACWA Power has been active in Egypt since 2015 and has invested $8.8 billion in renewable energy projects. These projects add up to 4.8 GW of electricity production across the country.
In addition to wind energy, ACWA Power runs two solar power plants in Egypt: a 120 MW facility in Benban and a 200 MW project in Kom Ombo.
