Africa Sets 200 GW Solar Target as Investment Push Gathers Pace

Africa is being challenged to add at least 200 GW of new solar capacity over the next five years, under an initiative announced by the International Solar Alliance at its regional meeting in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The target represents a major acceleration in deployment, with the focus shifting from isolated megawatt-scale projects towards coordinated utility-scale and distributed solar development across the continent. The ambition comes as Africa’s solar market is already expanding rapidly. The continent is expected to install around 17 GW of solar in 2026 alone, with distributed solar accounting for roughly three-quarters of new installations. Reaching 200 GW over five years, however, would require deployment to accelerate substantially beyond the current trajectory, making financing, grid access and project execution critical to the target.

To support the expansion, the ISA and its partners announced a continental clean-energy plan for solarisation, alongside a US$200 million Africa Solar Facility aimed at supporting young private-sector entrepreneurs in renewable energy. The initiatives are intended to move solar development beyond large utility projects and support the growth of distributed energy businesses across African markets.

Agriculture is another major focus. A new programme covering seven countries, including Zimbabwe, will promote solar-powered irrigation, water pumping and agri-processing, with the initiative expected to help mobilise around US$1 billion in investment. The approach links solar deployment with agricultural productivity, rural development and food security rather than treating electricity generation as a standalone objective.

The 200 GW target is ultimately a test of whether Africa can convert its enormous solar resource into actual investment and connected capacity. With the continent possessing some of the world’s strongest solar resources but still having relatively low installed capacity, the combination of a clear deployment target, dedicated financing and sector-specific programmes could help close that gap. The challenge now is turning 200 GW from a continental ambition into projects that actually get financed, built and connected to the grid.
