Lyra Energy Powers Up: Thakadu Solar Project Illuminates South Africa’s Green Future

South Africa’s renewable energy landscape is set to receive a significant boost with the ongoing development of the Thakadu Solar Project, a monumental undertaking by Lyra Energy.

Located strategically on the border of the Free State and North West provinces, this 255 MW solar PV facility represents a substantial private investment in the nation’s energy future, underscoring a growing commitment to clean energy and grid stability.

The Thakadu Solar Project is being developed in two distinct phases. Phase 1 is currently under construction, with its Commercial Operation Date (COD) anticipated in the first half of 2027.

Following closely, Phase 2 is slated to commence construction in the latter half of 2026, collectively bringing a formidable renewable energy capacity online. This phased approach allows for meticulous planning and execution, ensuring the project’s successful integration into the national grid.

With a substantial capital expenditure of $240 million, equivalent to approximately ZAR 4 billion, the project highlights the significant financial commitment required for large-scale renewable infrastructure.

The financing structure is robust, with 80% debt leverage secured through a senior lender, Standard Bank South Africa. Equity contributions are diversified, coming from Scatec, Standard Bank, and Stanlib, demonstrating a strong collaborative effort from key financial players in the region.

This multi-faceted financing model is indicative of the increasing confidence in South Africa’s renewable energy sector. A critical component of the project’s commercial viability is the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) signed with three undisclosed commercial and industrial off-takers.

These agreements ensure a stable demand for the electricity generated, providing long-term revenue certainty for the project. Scatec, a global leader in renewable energy solutions, plays a pivotal role, responsible for 80% of the capital expenditure, as well as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC), Operations and Maintenance (O&M), and asset management of the facility.

This comprehensive involvement by an experienced player ensures high standards of development and operational efficiency.

The Thakadu Solar Project embodies the ethos of large-scale private investment driving South Africa’s renewable energy transition. It not only contributes significantly to the country’s energy security but also addresses the burgeoning corporate demand for clean energy.

As South Africa navigates its energy challenges, projects like Thakadu stand as beacons of progress, showcasing how strategic partnerships and substantial investment can pave the way for a sustainable and greener future.
