EDF Advances Toward Full Delivery of South African Wind and Hybrid Projects

EDF Power Solutions has brought its 140-megawatt San Kraal wind farm into commercial operation and reached provisional commissioning for the Umoyilanga hybrid project, moving two major South African assets closer to full delivery.

The San Kraal wind farm adds new capacity to the national grid at a time when South Africa continues to rely on emergency generation and ageing coal plants to meet demand. With commercial operations now underway, the project shifts from construction risk to operational performance, a critical transition for both lenders and the grid operator.

EDF has also achieved provisional commissioning for the Umoyilanga project, a hybrid development that combines renewable generation with battery storage. Hybrid systems are becoming increasingly relevant in South Africa as variable renewable capacity expands faster than transmission and balancing infrastructure.

Together, the two projects reflect a shift in project design. Wind and solar assets are no longer being built in isolation. Storage is being added to improve dispatchability, reduce curtailment risk, and support grid stability during peak demand periods.

While capacity additions remain important, execution has become the defining constraint in South Africa’s power sector. Projects that move from award to operation without prolonged delays help narrow the gap between procurement targets and delivered electricity.

EDF’s progress at San Kraal and Umoyilanga therefore carries weight beyond the individual sites. It shows that large developers can still navigate grid access, construction, and commissioning under current market conditions.

As South Africa pushes to add new generation at pace, the system will increasingly depend on projects that integrate production with flexibility. Wind, solar, and storage working together are becoming less of an option and more of a requirement.
