Egypt recently celebrated the launch of its largest solar power plant, the Abydos Solar PV Plant, located in the Aswan Governorate.
Built by AMEA Power, the 500 MW facility officially began operations in December 14, 2024, marking a major step forward in the country’s shift to renewable energy.
The plant will produce around 1,500 GWh of clean electricity each year, enough to power 300,000 homes and reduce 782,300 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
The project was completed in just 18 months, demonstrating AMEA Power’s ability to deliver large-scale energy projects efficiently.
Over 3,000 people worked on the construction, with many jobs going to local workers. This focus on hiring locally has not only boosted employment but also provided valuable training for young people, helping to address Egypt’s youth unemployment challenges.
The Abydos Solar PV Plant was financed by international organizations such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
