Kenya to Strengthen Renewable Energy Leadership at Powerelec 2024

Kenya is set to strengthen its role as a renewable energy leader in Africa with the upcoming Powerelec Kenya 2024 conference, happening from November 13-15, 2024.

The event will focus on solar energy and other renewable solutions, highlighting advanced technologies crucial to Kenya’s goal of a fully renewable energy-powered grid.

Held at the Sarit Expo Centre in Nairobi, the conference is expected to draw industry experts, global investors, and policymakers.  

As Kenya keeps investing heavily in renewable energy, it’s gaining recognition as a key player in Africa’s shift toward sustainable power.

About 73% of its installed energy comes from renewable sources like geothermal, wind, and solar. The Powerelec conference will be a space for discussing strategies and policies that can push Kenya’s renewable energy goals even further.

Lei Wu, COO at Sungrow’s Overseas Strategic KA Center, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, calling it a unique opportunity to support Kenya’s vision of reaching 100% renewable energy.

A key focus of the conference will be how to blend different renewable energy sources into the national grid.

Experts will discuss ways to increase investments in geothermal, solar, hydropower, and wind, while policymakers review Kenya’s progress toward its 100% renewable energy target for 2030.

The conference will also explore innovative solutions to improve grid flexibility and capacity.

In addition to Powerelec, Kenya’s commitment to renewables is underscored by initiatives like KenGen’s G2G Strategy for 2024-2034, which aims to speed up the country’s shift to sustainable energy with more geothermal, wind, and solar projects and advanced technologies.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has emphasized that the strategy is essential for providing clean, reliable power to all Kenyans and boosting the economy through job creation.

The conference also aligns with Kenya’s broader goals of universal electricity access and clean cooking solutions.

Projects like the Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP), which aims to provide electricity to underserved areas using solar mini-grids and standalone systems, reflect the government’s efforts to improve living conditions across the country.
