This commitment to harnessing its vast geothermal resources, primarily along the Great Rift Valley, is a cornerstone of the nation’s drive towards sustainable development and energy independence.
In a significant milestone, Kenya recently surpassed the 1 gigawatt (GW) threshold in geothermal power generation in early 2026, a testament to decades of strategic investment and development. This achievement is further bolstered by plans to add another 53 MW of geothermal capacity in 2026, reinforcing the country’s reliance on this clean, baseload energy source.
Geothermal energy offers a stable and continuous power supply, crucial for industrial growth and reducing the volatility associated with hydropower, which is susceptible to climatic variations. The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) plays a pivotal role in de-risking geothermal exploration, paving the way for private sector participation in power production.
Beyond power generation, Kenya is making substantial investments in its transmission infrastructure to ensure efficient distribution of this growing clean energy supply. In December 2025, the nation signed a $311 million deal for the construction of two high-voltage electricity transmission lines.
These projects are vital for strengthening the national grid, reducing transmission losses, and facilitating the evacuation of power from generation sites to demand centers.
