Kofa Set to Expand Battery Swapping Solution to Kenya and Togo

Kofa, a Ghanaian clean-tech startup, has revealed plans to launch its battery swapping solution in Kenya and Togo. Their innovative solution centres around battery swapping stations, offering a convenient and cost-effective way to power electric vehicles, homes, and businesses.

Kofa, headquartered in Accra, aims to create an electricity network that uses renewable energy sources and portable batteries.

More Than Just EV Charging:

Unlike traditional charging stations, Kofa’s system, called Kofa Swap & Go, utilises a network of portable, high-performance Kore2 batteries.

Building on the success of its initial Kore1 network launched in early 2023, Kofa’s next development boasts significant advancements. These versatile batteries can be swapped in seconds, eliminating the need for lengthy charging times.

Even in locations with unreliable internet connectivity, the Kore 2 network provides completely autonomous battery switching thanks to its cutting-edge proprietary IoT and advanced AI capabilities. This guarantees that consumers, wherever they are, can easily and rapidly get a brand-new, fully charged battery.

Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly:

Kofa’s batteries boast significant advantages:

  • Cost-effective: They are at least 30% cheaper than relying on petrol.
  • Environmentally friendly: By promoting electric vehicles and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, Kofa helps combat climate change.

Beyond Vehicles: Powering Homes and Businesses

Kofa’s vision extends beyond electric vehicles. The Kore2 batteries can power various applications, including:

  • Essential appliances: Refrigerators, lights, and fans can run for up to 15 hours on a single battery.
  • Off-grid and backup power: Homes and businesses can ensure uninterrupted power supply with Kofa’s battery solutions.

Expansion Plans and Partnerships:

Kofa is actively expanding its reach across Africa. Here are some key highlights:

  • Kenya and Togo: Kofa plans to launch its battery swapping network in these countries, providing cleaner and more accessible energy solutions.
  • Autopax Kenya Partnership: Kofa and Kenyan auto dealer Autopax Limited, a subsidiary of Green Africa Group, signed an agreement to construct an electric motorbike that is presently undergoing testing for the Kenyan and Ghanaian markets during the African Tech Summit held in Nairobi.

With a full charge, the motorcycles will have a carrying capacity of about 250 kg and a range of 100 km. Kofa’s job is to make sure the bikes run well. Its Kore2 Swap and Go Network is used for this.

The bikes will be assembled by Autopax, which will also procure certain parts from Kenya. The agreement was signed on February 15th.

  • Jidi Electric Motorcycle: In collaboration with TAIL-G, Kofa co-developed the Jidi e-motorcycle, a robust electric option for urban mobility.

The Future of Urban Energy:

Kofa’s innovative approach is making significant strides towards:

  • Affordable and accessible energy: The Kore2 network provides a convenient and cost-effective way to power homes, businesses, and vehicles.
  • Sustainable transportation: By promoting electric vehicles and battery swapping, Kofa contributes to a cleaner and greener future for African cities.
  • Reduced carbon footprint: Transitioning away from fossil fuels and utilising renewable energy sources aligns with Kofa’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
