South Africa Opens Renewable Energy Training Centre to Build the Workforce Behind the Energy Transition

South Africa’s energy transition will not succeed on policy alone. It depends on technicians, engineers, installers, and system operators. That reality shaped the launch of a renewable energy training centre and campus microgrid at Vhembe TVET College in Thohoyandou.

The project, led by Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority in partnership with Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre, is part of a wider South Africa–China technical training programme designed to prepare workers for the country’s shift toward cleaner electricity.

The centre includes an operating microgrid and practical training systems covering solar generation, battery storage, and energy management. Students will not only study these technologies. They will work with them in real conditions.

That distinction matters. South Africa’s electricity crisis has forced the country to accelerate renewable deployment. But building infrastructure without building skills creates another bottleneck. Installations slow down. Maintenance suffers. Local participation shrinks.

The training centre is designed to address that gap directly. At the launch, Nkosinathi Sishi, Director-General of Higher Education and Training, linked the initiative to a larger national goal: shifting skills development closer to industrial strategy. Training institutions are expected to support domestic manufacturing capacity within the renewable energy value chain. The intention is not simply to produce installers. It is to prepare workers who can support production and system operation across the sector.

That shift reflects how the energy transition is being framed inside government. Electricity reform is no longer treated only as a supply problem. It is also a jobs policy, a manufacturing policy, and a regional development policy.

The Makwarela campus project shows how that approach is beginning to take shape on the ground. The microgrid installed at the site serves two purposes at once. It provides electricity for the campus itself. It also functions as a live training platform. Students can observe system performance, test equipment, and understand how distributed generation works in practice.

This matters especially for rural areas. Many of South Africa’s future renewable installations will be located outside major urban centres. Training programmes based only in cities leave communities near those installations dependent on external expertise. Local training changes that equation.

Phase one of the programme has already expanded renewable training infrastructure across five technical colleges in Limpopo, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. Fifty lecturers and students have also completed specialised training in China as part of the partnership. Early employment outcomes suggest the model is beginning to connect training with labour demand more effectively than earlier programmes.

Still, the challenge ahead remains large. South Africa’s transition requires thousands of trained workers across installation, grid integration, maintenance, and system planning. It also requires stronger cooperation between colleges, industry, and government agencies so that training keeps pace with project pipelines.

Phase two of the initiative aims to extend similar facilities across all nine provinces. If implemented at scale, the programme could strengthen the role of technical colleges as anchors of regional energy development.

The country’s electricity transition will be built site by site and worker by worker. This launch shows where that work begins.
