Zambia Breaks Ground on 100MW Chirundu Solar Plant

Zambia has officially begun construction on a 100MW solar power plant in Chirundu, a strategic step in expanding the country’s renewable energy capacity.

The project, situated on 285 hectares about 11 kilometres from the Kafue-Chirundu Road and near the Kafue Gorge Lower hydropower station, is part of a broader national solar initiative projected to exceed 1,000MW in the near term.

The Chirundu Solar Plant is being developed by ZESCO’s Kafue Gorge Lower subsidiary in partnership with China Jigsco Energy Corporation.

The $90 million investment covers both the solar installation and a 15-kilometre transmission line to connect the facility to Zambia’s national grid. This infrastructure ensures that electricity generated from the plant reaches communities efficiently and reliably.

Renewable Energy Investment in Zambia

Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote emphasized that the project reflects the government’s commitment under President Hakainde Hichilema to accelerate renewable energy development. The initiative forms part of Zambia’s broader transition toward a diversified and climate-resilient energy sector.

Chikote also acknowledged Chieftainess Sikoongo for providing land for the project, underscoring the collaboration between local communities and national development plans.

The solar plant is expected to create more than 600 construction jobs, with over 100 permanent positions available once the facility becomes operational. Its lifespan of 25 years promises long-term contributions to both energy stability and local employment.

Enhancing Energy Security

ZESCO Managing Director Justin Loongo highlighted the role of the Chirundu plant in strengthening national energy security. He noted that solar energy serves as a rapid solution to power shortages, complementing Zambia’s hydropower infrastructure while other energy sources are explored. The project is designed to deliver clean, stable electricity, support local communities, and attract private investment.

Transmission planning focused on efficiency and safety. The chosen route, from Mwiinga Village through Kapiri Hills, avoids private land, protected areas, and displacement, while remaining a safe distance from the Kafue River. This careful planning minimizes environmental impact and community disruption.

Complementing Hydropower

Project Manager Philip Pretorius described the Chirundu plant as a hybrid project, intended to work alongside existing hydropower facilities. The initiative will not only increase electricity supply but also integrate community development programs.

Jigsco Energy Corporation and ZESCO plan to invest in skills development and job creation initiatives to benefit surrounding communities.

The Chirundu Solar Plant represents Phase One of a larger 200MW solar development plan, signaling a new stage in Zambia’s energy transition. Anchored in public-private partnerships, the project prioritizes reliable electricity, economic growth, and sustainable energy production.

With construction now underway, the cumulative benefits of ongoing generation projects are expected to strengthen Zambia’s energy profile nationwide by 2026.
