Scatec Brings 273-MW Grootfontein Solar Park Online in South Africa’s Western Cape

Norwegian renewable energy developer Scatec ASA has officially commissioned the 273-MW Grootfontein solar park in South Africa, marking a major milestone for both the company and the country’s renewable energy sector.

The project now delivering power to the grid under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is Scatec’s first operational asset in the Western Cape and the largest co-located solar PV cluster in the province.

The solar park also holds national significance as the first project from REIPPPP Bid Window 5 to achieve commercial operation. With many Round 5 projects delayed by rising equipment costs, grid constraints, and complex procurement conditions, Grootfontein’s successful commissioning sends a strong signal to investors watching South Africa’s procurement pipeline.

Grootfontein is expected to generate 700 GWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power more than 180,000 households. The project is also set to offset approximately 630,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, contributing meaningfully to South Africa’s decarbonisation efforts and reducing pressure on Eskom’s constrained grid.

Scatec holds a 51% equity stake, with Black Economic Empowerment partner H1 Holdings owning 46.5%, and the Grootfontein Local Community Trust holding the remaining 2.5%. In line with its operating model across Africa, Scatec will also oversee Operations & Maintenance and Asset Management, ensuring long-term project stability.

South Africa remains one of Scatec’s most important African markets. The company already operates more than 448 MW of solar capacity across the country, primarily in the Northern Cape. Grootfontein expands that footprint into a new province and enhances grid diversity in an energy system historically dependent on thermal generation.

CEO Terje Pilskog emphasised the strategic value of the project: “We are proud to commence commercial operations at Grootfontein, reinforcing our strong track record in South Africa. This project builds on our commitment to deliver clean, reliable energy while creating long-term value for local communities and partners.”

Alberto Gambacorta, EVP and General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, called it a milestone demonstrating the resilience and execution strength of Scatec’s teams: “Bringing the Grootfontein plant into operation is an important milestone. This achievement reflects the dedication and resilience of our teams and contractors.”

Scatec’s entry into the Western Cape sharpens focus on several structural opportunities in South Africa’s energy sector:

  • Bid Window 5 Momentum
  • Grid Strengthening in the Western Cape
  • Growing Role of Community Ownership

Scatec has confirmed that Grootfontein is part of its broader plan to scale renewable energy deployment across Africa, with additional projects under assessment in South Africa, West Africa, and the Horn of Africa. The commissioning reinforces both the company’s and the Western Cape’s growing relevance in South Africa’s evolving energy landscape.
