Tanzania is set to host the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit, an event focused on speeding up energy access across Africa.
The summit is scheduled for January 27-28, 2025, in Dar es Salaam and will bring together over 1,500 participants.
These include representatives from the African Union, the African Development Bank, and the World Bank.
The main aim of the summit is to advance the goal of providing electricity to 300 million people in Africa by 2030, a mission called Mission 300.
The summit is a key platform for governments, private sector leaders, development organizations, and civil society to work together.
Noel Kaganda, Director of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation in Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, stated that the event will focus on achieving universal energy access.
Innocent Luoga, Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy at Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy, shared that 14 pilot African nations are expected to endorse the Africa Energy Compact at the summit.
The compact aims to create a roadmap for fair and sustainable energy access across the continent.
One of the main highlights will be showcasing Tanzania’s progress in energy generation. Gerson Msigwa, Tanzania’s chief government spokesperson, highlighted the achievements of the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Project (JNHP).
The project is currently generating 1,410 megawatts from six turbines, and once completed later this year, it is expected to produce a total of 2,115 megawatts.
