South Africa has commissioned Africa’s largest hybrid renewable energy project, bringing a major source of dispatchable clean electricity onto the national grid as the country accelerates its energy transition. The Hydra Project, located in the Northern Cape, combines a 216 MW solar photovoltaic plant with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Developed by TotalEnergies, Hydra Storage Holding, and Reatile Renewables, the facility will supply 75 MW of dispatchable renewable electricity to Eskom every day between 5:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. under a 20-year power purchase agreement. The project is expected to generate more than 400 GWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to power approximately 200,000 South African households.
Unlike conventional solar plants, Hydra was designed with battery storage from the outset, allowing electricity generated during the day to be stored and dispatched during periods of higher demand. The combination improves grid reliability while reducing reliance on coal-fired generation and diesel peaking plants. The project was developed under South Africa’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), which was created to bring reliable generation capacity onto the grid quickly while supporting the country’s broader Just Energy Transition objectives.
Speaking at the inauguration, Magali Pailhé, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Southern Africa, said the project demonstrates that renewable energy can contribute not only to decarbonisation but also to energy security by delivering reliable, dispatchable power. The consortium behind Hydra comprises TotalEnergies (35%), Hydra Storage Holding (35%), and Reatile Renewables (30%).
The commissioning comes as South Africa continues to diversify its electricity mix following years of supply shortages and load shedding. While solar and wind capacity has expanded rapidly, integrating battery storage is increasingly viewed as essential for improving system flexibility and ensuring renewable energy can support the grid beyond daylight hours.
Hydra reflects that shift. Rather than measuring projects solely by installed capacity, developers are increasingly focusing on when electricity can be delivered and how it supports grid stability. As battery costs continue to decline and renewable technologies mature, hybrid solar-plus-storage projects are expected to play a larger role in South Africa’s future electricity system.
