South Africa’s Renewable Energy Market Gets a New Insurance Facility

South Africa’s renewable energy sector has gained a new financial tool aimed at making clean energy projects easier to finance. Global specialty broker McGill and Partners has launched Protea Green, a dedicated renewable energy insurance facility developed in partnership with local broker GIB. The facility combines international insurance capacity with local market expertise to provide cover for renewable energy projects across South Africa.

Backed by leading insurers including Aviva, Volt, and Munich Re Specialty – Global Markets, Protea Green is designed to address risks associated with the construction and operation of renewable energy infrastructure. The launch comes as South Africa’s renewable energy pipeline continues to expand through utility-scale solar, wind, and battery storage projects, increasing demand for specialist insurance products that understand both global underwriting standards and local operating conditions.

Insurance is often an overlooked part of project finance, but it plays a critical role in determining whether projects reach financial close. Comprehensive cover for construction delays, equipment damage, operational disruptions, and grid-related risks can improve lender confidence and reduce financing uncertainty. By bringing international underwriting capacity together with local market knowledge, the new facility aims to provide developers and investors with insurance solutions tailored to South Africa’s evolving renewable energy market.

The announcement also reflects the growing maturity of the country’s clean energy sector. As the market expands, supporting services such as insurance, technical advisory, legal expertise, and project finance are becoming increasingly important alongside generation capacity. For developers, the facility offers an additional layer of risk management. For lenders and investors, it provides greater confidence in project resilience. And for the broader market, it signals that South Africa’s renewable energy ecosystem is continuing to evolve beyond project development into a more established investment environment.

While insurance may not receive the same attention as new power plants or financing announcements, it remains an essential part of the infrastructure that enables renewable energy projects to move from planning to construction. The launch of Protea Green is another indication that South Africa’s energy transition is being supported not only by new generation capacity, but also by the financial mechanisms needed to deliver it.
