Standard Bank and Anthem are moving forward with the 475-megawatt Notsi Solar PV Project, now recognised as South Africa’s largest single-phase photovoltaic development.
Located in Free State, the project represents a major expansion of privately financed renewable energy infrastructure at a time when the country continues to diversify its electricity generation mix.

The facility will cover more than 1,000 hectares and incorporate approximately 860,000 solar panels once completed. Annual output is expected to reach roughly 1.5 million megawatt-hours, with electricity delivered primarily to commercial and industrial users through a wheeling arrangement that transmits privately generated power across the national grid.
This delivery model is reshaping how large-scale infrastructure projects are structured. Instead of relying exclusively on utility procurement programmes, developers are increasingly building capacity for direct supply agreements with industrial customers seeking stable electricity access.
Standard Bank’s role as lead arranger and financial structurer highlights the growing importance of sophisticated financing mechanisms in delivering large renewable projects across South Africa.
Engineering, procurement and construction responsibilities have been assigned to a joint venture involving China Energy Engineering Corporation and Northwest Electric Power Design Institute.
Construction is expected to take approximately 26 months. Projects of this scale require extensive transmission integration, civil works and substation infrastructure, placing them among the most complex renewable developments currently underway in the country.
As South Africa continues to open its electricity market to private generation, projects like Notsi demonstrate how commercial investment is becoming central to expanding national generation capacity.
